Four bedroom 5 star Dorset holiday cottage

A Five Star holiday home near Shaftesbury in rural North Dorset especially suited to family groups with elderly members.

The Dairy House is a newly-converted 5-star graded self-catering holiday home located on the edge of the village of Motcombe, in the countryside just north of historic Shaftesbury in Dorset, England.  We are six miles south of the A303 and easily reached from London in two hours.

With four spacious bedrooms on two floors, three bathrooms, a living room and kitchen/dining room, The Dairy House can easily accommodate eight people plus baby.

It is especially suitable for family groups where one or more members have restricted mobility.

The three main ground floor rooms and patio garden are fully accessible to wheelchair users.  One bedroom has a specially designed en-suite bathroom with non-slip Altro floor and wheel-in shower.

Level access from the car parking area immediately outside the front door and, through double French doors, to the 600 sq. foot sunny and wholly private patio garden. 

Church Farm itself is a 16 acre farm adjoining woodland and the open countryside, standing on the edge of the North Dorset village of Motcombe.  The land is a mixture of old pasture and young deciduous woodlands, with some 2,500 trees planted in 1997.  The land is carefully managed to provide a good environment for wildlife.

Motcombe is a long-established village with two pubs, an excellent village shop and two schools.  It won the title of Dorset Community Village of the Year in 2000.  The Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury, home to the famous Gold Hill, stands two miles to the south.  For details of local facilities, please click here.

As befits its name, Church Farm is near the parish church which stands in the village's conservation area just to the east.  The Dairy House, built of brick and stone under a slate roof, is a fine example of traditional North Dorset rural architecture.

The kitchen, living room and all four bedrooms have views over the old brick-walled farmyard, now landscaped with herbs and flowering shrubs. Motcombe village church and the rolling Dorset hills lie beyond. 

Carefully converted in 2000 and retaining many original features, The Dairy House now provides an attractive and flexible holiday home in this popular region.

With full double-glazing, gas-fired central heating, a Rayburn and a living room stove, it's a cosy year-round base and both mid-week and weekend breaks are available from October to June. 

All rooms have both telephone and TV sockets.  The showers are thermostatically controlled.

The 600 sq. foot private patio garden lies between The Dairy House and a former milking parlour which we now use for storage.  It is enclosed by two stone walls and is completely private but also light and sunny. French doors open onto it from both the living room and dining room. There is a complete set of quality teak garden furniture.

One feature which has been much appreciated by many of our guests is the arrangements we have made for complimentary membership of the popular Motcombe Park Sports Centre, about ten minutes walk away along a quiet drive.  Located in the attractive parkland of Port Regis School which is adjoins Church Farm, this family-oriented Centre has tennis, squash and badminton courts as well as a 25m swimming pool and sauna.

Secure dry storage is available for bicycles or similar possessions.

We regret that we do not normally take pets although this is sometimes possible in special situations so do please enquire.  

The owners, Gilbert and Sue, live at Church Farm together with their sons age 15 and 12 . Both have worked in the tourism and hospitality industries for many years.  Between them they are fluent in French, Italian, Swedish and Norwegian and enquiries are welcome in any of these languages.

Disabled Access

Main entrance Slight slope on tarmac up from main parking area - approx. 1:20. Alternatively drop off outside front doors which are 2 x 860mm doors (it's the old barn entrance and was once wide enough to get a tractor through!)

2 x 560 mm doors in each doorway (both doors need to be open to allow a wheelchair through).
