This charming, 'chocolate box', detached holiday cottage is believed to be approaching 500 years old. Naturally, guests are treated to a wealth of period features, such as uneven walls and floors, low ceilings and of course the wonderful fireplace where open fires in a solid fuel stove can be enjoyed. It is furnished in sympathy with its period features and makes a delightful holiday home for visitors seeking charm and character in a seaside village location.
The cottage is situated in an idyllic rural spot, tucked away in its own large and pretty garden in the upper settlement of Branscombe village in East Devon. It is just a stone's throw from the Fountain Head Inn, which is renowned for good food and locally brewed beers. Branscombe's pebble beach has a very pleasant cafe/restaurant and is about 5 minutes away by car. It can also be reached by walking through the woods and along the Jurassic Coastal Path. There is a variety of secluded coves and beautiful beaches to access by walking this stunning footpath which is part of the Heritage South West Way.
The cottage features a thatched porch entrance, which leads straight into a comfortable sitting room with lots of 'olde worlde' features including an inglenook fireplace, stone floors, beams and a pretty window seat. There is a cosy two seater sofa and two matching arm chairs. The television is shelved with a digital radio/ DVD/CD player.
The well equipped fitted kitchen features antique pine wall and floor units, a window seat, fold-out pine table with 4 chairs. Appliances include an electric oven and hob, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer and automatic washing machine.
The quaint and attractive downstairs shower room features a good size modern shower cubicle, wash basin and WC.
Winding stairs lead to the first floor, where all the bedrooms overlook the pretty garden and countryside. The large main bedroom has a double bed, unusual chimney breast feature and window seat. Bedroom 2 is a good size room with twin beds and a window seat. Bedroom 3 has a single bed, window seat and a cot.
Children and pets welcome. Sorry no smokers. The prices include electricity and central heating, but guests must bring their own linen and towels. Pets are welcome with careful owners.
There is private off road parking for one car. The fully enclosed large and pretty front garden is a sun-trap with a lawn, fruit trees, rambling roses, clematis and honeysuckle. The patio has a herb rockery and cast iron garden furniture. There's a hedged, overgrown paddock adjoining the cottage which adds to its seclusion.
Branscombe is set in an "area of outstanding natural beauty" in East Devon just east of Sidmouth. It is a scattered village of unusual character. Charming houses of cob and thatch are sited irregularly on the steep wooded slopes of the combe, which widens towards the sea. Wild flowers and wildlife abound in the combes; buzzards and peregrine falcons fly overhead. Yew Tree Cottage nestles in the heart of this special place and offers a wonderful holiday escape.
