For railway enthusiasts there is a local Tarka line, and a great combination trip from Paignton to Kingswear, thence over to Dartmouth by ferry, and a leisurely river trip up the Dart to Totnes. 

Wonderful walks, and a host of activities are available locally. There are pubs serving food and shop/P.O. 1 mile.
