Argeles sur Mer, France

The resort and fishing village of Argeles-sur-Mer is situated in the southernmost part of France, gateway to Spain, at the foot of the Pyrenees in the Languedoc-Roussillon region and stretches for 7km of beaches and 3km of creeks.  The resort detains the label "kid" and is awarded with the Blue Flag for clean beaches every year.  There are sporting and relaxing activities for everyone including attended beaches from June until September, childrens' clubs, sailing schools, windsurfing, bob skiing, deep-sea diving, boat hiring, sea-trips, sea-kayak, waterskiing and pedalos.

Lying at the foot of the Pyrenees, Argeles Plage is the last sand-beach before the creeks.  Along the waterfront, discover the 2km promenade which is flowered with numerous plants of Mediterranean species (aloes, cluster pines, mimosas, olive-trees, laurels, lantanas).

Argeles is a typically old Catalan village with a quite particular Mediterranean charm: narrow streets decorated with flowers and lined with pebble fronted  houses.  The village is lively and welcoming all through the year, thanks to its numerous shops, its traditional market, its craft market from June until September and its social life.

Discover the rich cultural and historical patrimony of the town: Its Museum of Catalan art and folk traditions, and it's guided tours.

Where the mountains and the sea meet, Port Argeles is the favourite port of call on the Catalan coast with its comfortable  and high performance equipment of a real marina, its Mediterranean architecture, its bars, its ice-cream parlours, its restaurants and shops.

There are also plenty of activities away from the beach including horse riding.  The Ranch des Alberes, which offers pony rides, is open all year round, and the Kentucky Ranch is open 9am to 12 noon and 3pm to 7pm in July and August and from 3pm to 6pm at weekends and school holidays during the rest of the year.

We would also recommend a visit to Parc Valmy.  It is considered to have the best view of the beach, harbour and mountain by all the locals.  Although the castle is privately owned, the grounds are open to the public, and are a delight to behold.  There are waterfalls and fountains and there are also many typical Catalan animals, such as goats, donkeys and sheep.

Argeles sur Mer is 20 km south of Perpignan in one of the most sunny regions of France.  You can enjoy quality of life here: sea, sun, sand, mountain, Catalan traditions and gourmet cuisine.

Nearby attractions include the neighbouring seaside town of Collioure, which is very picturesque.  It has been the home to Matisse and other well known artists, who came for the incredible light of the area.  Try tasting the patisseries and anchovies of Collioure and the local drinks such as Banyuls and Muscat.  The distinctive Catalan food is a must wherever you are.

Nearby airports include Perpignan and Gerona.  Ryanair currently fly to both of these airports.
