Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the fourth largest island and is the furthest east of all the Canary Islands.  It is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa.  The island enjoys a dry mild climate with average temperatures ranging from 21 degrees to 29 degrees all year round.  It is the perfect destination for holidays, no matter what time of year you wish to go.

It is well known that Lanzarote is volcanic, like so many of the other islands in the Canaries.  Recent eruptions occurred in the 18th and 19th century.  It is also of interest that the film 'Planet of the Apes' was shot here as parts of the terrain seems like it could be another world.

Despite this, the island has many beautiful white beaches such as Playa Blanca (pictured above) and Papagayo.

Playa Blanca is today one of the most important tourist centres on the island.  Playa Flamingo and Playa Dorada are also very popular with their golden white sand and calm waters, making them ideal family beaches.

For nightlife the liveliest places are the capital Arrecife and the two main resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise.  In Puerto del Carmen there are two merging areas: the famous promenade with it's many live music bars, pubs and discos and la Tinosa which centres around the old fisherman's port and has a very special atmosphere.  In Costa Teguise there is a good selection of restaurants, bars and pubs along Avenida Islas Canarias near the Toca Shopping centre.  If you are looking for a taste of 'local' nightlife, then Jose Antonio St. in Arrecife is the place to go!

As you would expect sea sports are very popular in Lanzarote, including windsurfing, swimming, diving, surfing and fishing.  In Puerto del Carmen it is also possible to go on deep sea fishing excursions, hire jet skis, parasailing and much more.  There are also professional gyms, which provide facilities including squash and tennis.
